Humanoid, robot dog or telepresence robot: which fits?
A humanoid performs, a robot dog roams, a telepresence robot brings a remote person into the room. How to pick the right type for your event.
Choose a humanoid when you want a human-shaped figure that can pose, gesture and perform; a robot dog when you want agile movement through a space; and a telepresence robot when the point is to bring a real, remote person into the room. A fourth type, the wheeled social robot with a screen, suits reception desks and simple questions. The right choice follows from what your visitors should experience, not from which machine is newest.
Start with what visitors should experience
Write one sentence describing what a visitor should do or feel, then match the type to it:
- Stop, watch and take a photo – a humanoid or a robot dog.
- Watch a short show or a stage moment – a humanoid, usually running a rehearsed routine.
- Talk to a real expert, executive or speaker who cannot travel – a telepresence robot.
- Get directions or answers at a desk – a wheeled social robot.
Each type also fails in its own way. Humanoids need a clear zone around them, robot dogs move low through people's feet, and telepresence robots are only as good as the venue network and the person driving them. Knowing the weak point early is as useful as knowing the strengths.
Humanoids: presence and performance
A humanoid is the shape most audiences picture when they hear the word robot, and the easiest to build a photo moment or a choreographed routine around. The compact Unitree G1 stands about 1.32 m tall and weighs about 35 kg with its battery. Unitree lists about two hours of battery life from a quick-release battery, a depth camera with 3D LiDAR, and a four-microphone array. The full-size Unitree H1 is about 180 cm tall and weighs about 47 kg.
The trade-offs are space and supervision. Unitree asks users to keep a sufficient safe distance between its humanoid and people, and humanoid4rent's safety guidance advises assuming that a bipedal robot could fall in the worst direction and keeping that area clear. Plan an exclusion zone, an operator and charging breaks from the start. See the Unitree G1 and Unitree H1 in the catalogue.
Robot dogs: movement and energy
Quadrupeds are lower and lighter than full-size humanoids and are designed to walk around a space rather than stand in one spot. The Unitree Go2 weighs about 15 kg and measures about 70 × 31 × 40 cm standing. Unitree quotes about 1–2 hours of battery life for the Air, Pro and X versions and about 2–4 hours for the EDU version with its larger 15,000 mAh battery. Boston Dynamics' Spot, marketed for industrial inspection, weighs 33.8 kg, has a listed top speed of 1.6 m/s, an IP54 rating, an operating range of −20 °C to 55 °C and an average runtime of 90 minutes, with a 60-minute recharge.
The trade-off is height. A robot at knee level disappears in a dense crowd and can become a trip hazard, so it works best with a cleared route or a small arena. It also offers less of the face-to-face interaction people expect from a humanoid. See the Unitree Go2.
Telepresence robots: a real person, remotely
A telepresence robot is a screen, cameras and microphones on a driveable base, controlled by a person who is somewhere else. The Double 3, for example, adjusts its height between 47 and 60 inches and lists about four hours of runtime with a two-hour recharge, six beamforming microphones, an 8-watt speaker, a 9.7-inch display and dual-band Wi-Fi. Its maker positions it for hybrid offices and classrooms, and its homepage showed it as sold out on 12 October 2026, which is a reminder to confirm that any model a supplier offers is still supported.
The value is a genuine conversation: an engineer at headquarters can answer questions on your stand. The risk is the network. humanoid4rent's pricing guide lists Wi-Fi congestion among the venue conditions that affect crew time, so test the connection on the actual floor, ideally at a busy hour, and agree who drives the robot and when.
Wheeled social robots: reception and simple questions
Pepper is the best-known example. humanoid4rent lists it as a wheeled social robot with a chest-mounted touchscreen, and Aldebaran's technical documentation gives its height as 1,210 mm with arms down. The same documentation notes that the battery charges only when the robot is powered off and plugged in, so plan charging breaks rather than expecting it to run on a cable all day. Ownership of the platform has changed: heise reported in July 2025 that the Chinese company Maxvision had bought Aldebaran's technology assets and the rights to Pepper and NAO after Aldebaran's insolvency. Ask any supplier about software support and spare parts for the specific unit. See Pepper.
How to choose: the trade-offs side by side
- Visibility over a crowd: a full-size humanoid or a telepresence robot at full height beats a robot dog.
- Real conversation: telepresence puts a human on the other end; humanoids and social robots depend on how they are set up. Ask whether the robot is autonomous, teleoperated or pre-programmed – see teleoperated or autonomous robots.
- Moving through a space: a robot dog.
- Stage moments and choreography: a humanoid.
- Outdoors: check the specific model's environmental rating and read outdoor events and weather.
- Run time: manufacturer battery figures describe their own test conditions; plan breaks using battery life at events.
- Crew: every type needs an operator, a remote driver or both – see operators and staffing.
Checklist before you request quotes
- One sentence on what visitors should do or feel.
- Robot type first, model second.
- Floor plan with a clear zone around the robot and the route it will use.
- Floor surface, power points and a charging location.
- A network test on the venue floor if the robot depends on Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Active minutes per battery, and whether spare batteries come with the robot.
- Who operates or drives it, and, for telepresence, who the remote person is.
- What the robot does on its own and what is remote-controlled or scripted.
If you are not sure which type fits, describe the goal in your request and leave the robot type open, so suppliers can propose the option that suits your venue.
FAQ
Is a robot dog cheaper to hire than a humanoid?
There is no published rate card that compares them fairly, because hire prices depend on the supplier, hours, crew and transport. Purchase prices differ a lot – Unitree lists the Go2 Air at $1,600 and the G1 from $13.5K, both excluding tax and shipping – but that does not translate directly into hire prices. Compare quotes for the same scope with how to compare robot hire quotes.
Can a telepresence robot replace a speaker on stage?
It can bring a remote person's face and voice into the room, but a built-in screen such as the Double 3's 9.7-inch display is small for an audience. For stage use, route the call to the main screen and sound system, and keep the robot for one-to-one conversations.
Which type works best outdoors?
That depends on the specific model's rating rather than the type. Spot, for example, lists IP54 and an operating range of −20 °C to 55 °C; ask for the equivalent figures for any robot you are offered.
Can I book two different types for one event?
Yes. A humanoid on stage and a robot dog on the floor can complement each other; ask for both in one request so suppliers can plan shared transport and crew.
